Black Achievers Scholarship Information

The Sidney-Shelby Black Achievers Scholarship was created to provide financial incentives to the black youth of Sidney-Shelby County to begin or continue their college education, assist financially-needy African-American youth who might not otherwise be able to continue their education, recognize and reward Sidney and Shelby County Black students who have demonstrated academic success, and to honor the memory of James P. Humphrey, Sidney’s first black mayor.

 

For current high school students

James P. Humphrey Sidney-Shelby County Black Achievers Scholarship was designed to  provide financial incentives to black youth of Sidney-Shelby County to begin or continue their college education, assist financially-needy African-American youth who might not otherwise be able to continue their education, recognize and reward Sidney and Shelby County African American students who have demonstrated academic success, and honor the memory of James P. Humphrey, Sidney’s first black mayor.

To be eligible to receive this scholarship, students must be high school seniors who attend a Shelby County school or the Upper Valley Career Center, are residents of Shelby County, and have an accumulative 2.0 grade point average or better and/or have a significantly improved academic record.

High school students who meet eligibility standards are required to request an official application from their school counselor (or download it below), fill out Sections I and II of the application form, submit two letters of recommendation, one from a school representative and one from a community representative, and participate in an interview to assist the committee in the selection process.

For past recipients in college

Any current James P. Humphrey Sidney-Shelby County Black Achievers Scholarship recipient who resides in Shelby County may apply for grants to continue their college educations.  Current college students must have an accumulative 2.0 grade point average or better and/or have a significantly improved academic record.

Additional criteria for selecting recipients will include but not be limited to potential for achievement, leadership ability, school and community service, extra-curricular involvement, quality of the application, financial need, no criminal record and current success in college.

Current college students must request an application from a member of the BASC (or download it below), fill out Sections I and II of the application, attach a copy of their most recent transcript to the application form, and attach a copy of their most recent bill statement to the application form.
